Today was a learning day but I think we coped well. We always go up the sheep and horses in the morning to check everyone is ok and to top up waters, put on fly masks, move them into different paddocks etc and then, on our second visit, we poo pick/muck out. All was well on first checking but when went up for our second visit of the morning we noticed that Benji, one of the wethers, was lying down, licking at his nearside forefoot. He didn’t want to get up but soon rallied when we rattled some sheep nuts and didn’t seem lame.
However, we decided that it was definitely the day for a foot check so we put the girls and his wether friend, Boris, into one of the stables and tipped Benji up to have a proper look. Hannah had a good sniff at the foot in question but there was nothing abnormal except maybe a little bit of muck gathered in between the toes which she removed. Valais Blacknose do need regular foot trims so she trimmed all four feet, put some ‘purple spray’ on the nearside fore and let him go back to graze with his friends and he’s been fine ever since.
